June 6 – June 30
Opening: Friday, June 6, 2014, 5-8 pm
Artist Talk: Friday, June 6, 2014 6 pm
Site95 is pleased to present Patrick McDonough’s solo project The Sun and Shade Project in Miami. The project, comprised of outdoor painting and architectural sculpture, focuses on the physical and social setting of the city of Miami. It identifies with the every day structures the public encounters while raising awareness and reflection of environmental issues.
On a donated lot of Lombardi Properties in the Wynwood District, McDonough will install a large-scale outdoor mural. The large-scale mural will be presented on two walls facing the open space and painted with disused, recycled paints. The design itself will borrow patterns from solar PV cells, linking awareness to our environment while exploring sustainability, aesthetics and free time. In large scale, the brightly colored pattern creates a striking contrast against the Miami sky.
McDonough will also present a series of “Awning Studies” around the downtown area of Miami including Lombardi Properties, Dimensions Variable, and The Fountainhead Residency and Studios. “Awning Studies” have been made from a diverse variety of materials and presented at public locations including: the Hillyer Art Space, Washington DC, Marvin Gaye Park, Washington DC, and Socrates Sculpture Park, New York. In this particular series, McDonough considers topical issues of flooding in the area where the awnings may be considered as either disaster signs or signals of safe gathering places at cultural facilities. The awnings comply with the same technical and historical design researched within the Miami community as they investigate concepts of use, value, leisure, ornament, and community as they are interpreted as a social space.
All of the artwork will be viewable from the street on a 24hour basis. More information, including exact locations of the awnings, can be found on site95.org

About Site95
Site95 is an alternative non-profit organization established to present exhibitions for emerging and established artists in temporary urban locations. Drawing upon available space in major cities, Site95 will present over five projects per year, each extending up to two months. The impermanent sites create a platform for artists and curators to present innovative ideas in different contexts and allow viewers to experience new work not native to their location. Exhibitions will offer openings, educational talks and tours, screenings, and performances. Site95 also features the online Journal with contributions by writers, curators, and artists.
